Art Dossier Futurismo, May 1996.
Edited by: Maurizio Calvesi, Ester Coen
I don't know if I missed the contents page for this one, but it's funny how they didn't go with the usual drop cap. Instead, they're using the << symbol, which at first I thought I understand what's about, but shouldn't it be >>, as in pointing towards the future?
To me, this issue feels more resolved, from an editorial design point of view. I love the way they use the extra columns throughout; it's functional, it looks great, breaks up the page nicely with plenty of room to 'breath'. Even if it's just for a two-line caption, it takes up the entire column.
From the issues I photographed for this feature, this is the only one, where an image has been used in this way. It is a technique and a spread I've seen in almost any of the 'trendy' magazines out there today, yet this was designed in 1996. Eighteen years ago.
